Online Master’s Degree Programs: Items to Look For

Looking into Online Master’s Degree Programs is an excellent way to attain the professional success that you desire. Yet not all distance learning MBA programs are created equal. In the contrary, they could be rather different contingent to the university you are going to attend. Here are some additional guidelines when comparing MBA programs online.

We talked about accreditation before, but what type of accreditation should be looking for?

There are 3 main accreditation bodies in the USA:

  1. Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), for research universities
  2. Accreditation Council For Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), for colleges and universities
  3. International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE)

These 3 bodies are actually accredited by another institution: The Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). When you are doing your research make sure the accreditation is done by any of the 3 bodies, for the MBA programs, the ACBSP is the right accreditation body.

Professor/Student Ratio

As with a regular class, if the professor has too many students, the interaction becomes harder.  It is the same for online programs. You would want to look for universities that offer classes with a small group of students per professor. It would just make your life easier if you happen to have questions or if you would like some advice.

Demand

You could get an Online Master’s Degree in many universities around the country, however, those with high demand had most probably gone through many tests and had proven to be valuable, effective and with more earning potential at the end. Their methods will be proven, their professors vetted and the output (you) will be at a higher level than other graduating from other universities.

Financial Aid

Some people may have the means to pay for their education themselves, and can choose from many of the Online Master’s Degree Programs. However, most of us do not have that luxury. You need to compare what kind of options you have with each university. Some universities are known for having great financial aid programs. However, in this economy that is not the case in all universities.

Requirements for Residency

Just like any other university requirements, residency sometimes is required to complete an online degree program. You might not need to be living in the same state 100% of the time, however, the university could easily require you to attend a week or come to a course each summer. Although at first seems that residency requirements are an obstacle, sometimes they come as a blessing. You will be able to finally meet your professors and interact with your “cyber” classmates in real life. However, if you do have family and job duties, this might not be a good option for you. Make sure you get all the details.

Credits

Need to check if you can do credit transfer to a different university. You need to make sure that if you take some time away from the program you will not lose the credits. Do not guess or assume, check.

There are many things you’ll want to compare when looking into Online Master’s Degree Programs. Do not rush. Make sure you do your careful research. It is a heavy investment of time and money, take your time to make sure you choose the right program for you, not your friends, not your family.
